No other Australian wine can rival the quality and development pattern of Grange. Always exciting and opulent, the pinnacle of Australian reds, 1987 Grange is an elegant edition, beginning juicy and plummy, culminating in a very firm, dry finish. The growing season and vintage were marked by cool weather, crops in most South Australian regions were reduced by hailstorms in October.
The winemaking process involves great attention to detail, the best possible grapes from low-yielding, old Shiraz vines through to fermentation and fastidious oak maturation. From the Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley, and other vineyards in the McLaren Vale, a light, elegant style of Grange made with a blend of 90% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol 13.8%
TASTING NOTES
Medium crimson. Appealing red berry/ mint-chocolate aromas and subtle oak nuances. Hints of smoke, herbs and soy, plummy and sweet, elements of cocoa. A well concentrated wine with redcurrant/ blackberry/ chocolate/ mint flavours and fine, leafy, chewy tannins. Strong rich, berry fruit and minty characters with smoky oak overtones.

Penfolds was founded by a young English doctor who migrated to one of his country's most distant colonies a century and a half ago
Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold was born in 1811, the youngest of 11 children. He studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, graduating in 1838. Like many doctors before and since, Dr Penfold had a firm belief in the medicinal value of wine. Before he left Britain he had obtained vine cuttings from the south of France and these were planted around the site of the modest stone cottage he built with his wife, Mary, at Magill on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1845. The couple called this house The Grange, after Mary's home in England.
