The distinguished old vines at Gnadenfrei were established 1958, on a gentle south facing slope on the eastern side of a ridge separating Seppeltsfield from Marananga, planted to very dark heavy clay loam over red friable clay soils. Grapes are all hand picked in separate passes a few days apart, gently de-stemmed into open top wooden and concrete fermenters. Batches are pumped over, twice daily over the course of a week, followed by a gentle basket press. Upon completion of ferments, components are filled to a luxurious selection of completely new, Dominique Laurent French oak barriques, for three years maturation under an ancient stone shed, to be bottled without fining or filtration.
