Jim Barry acquired the Lodge Hill vineyard in 1977, as he was sure it would produce some of the best Riesling wines. Situated on the eastern ranges of the township of Clare, it is one of the highest vineyards in the Valley at an altitude of 480 metres, and is ideal for producing steely, mineral Rieslings, distinctive to the area. Clare Valley is one of the few regions in the world that produce this dry, delicate style with less than two grams of residual sugar per litre. The pinnacle of satisfaction, we can all be glad that Jim Barry planted Riesling. One of Australia's most prestigious wine regions, famous for Riesling, yielding harvests of generously flavoured fruit. Lodge Hill vineyard is one of the highest points in Clare Valley. Jim Barry's original intention was to devote the entire Lodge Hill property to Riesling. Soils are brown loam over a layer of clay and slate bedrock that's about 900 million years old and has cracked just off the vertical so that water can drain freely through it. It's a soil that nourishes the vines adequately, but makes them struggle just a bit. Grapes are harvested throughout the cool of night at optimum ripeness, characterized by high natural acidity, intense citrus flavours and floral notes, attributable to the property's higher altitudes.
TASTING NOTESCrystal straw, green hues. Rich and lifted bouquet, pink grapefruit and citrus lime, a hint of spice reveals its Lodge Hill provenance. The palate is dry and mineral, enhanced by a zingy natural acid backbone, flavours of mandarin, white peach and strawberry at the fore, immense length and intensity of flavour, before a crisp, zesty kabinett style of finish. |

The Jim Barry vineyards were established in the cool uplands of the North Mount Lofty ranges in 1959
In his 57 years of winemaking, the late Jim Barry saw many changes. Jim Barry graduated from Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947 and was offered a position at the Clarevale Cooperative, becoming the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley. In 1959 Jim and his wife Nancy purchased their first property on the northern outskirts of Clare and in 1964 purchased 70 acres of land from Duncan McRae Wood, part of which now forms the famous Armagh vineyard. With a growing family to look after, Jim took on the challenge of establishing his own winery and cellar door, with the first home-made wines being produced in 1974. "When I first came to the Clare Valley, grapes were delivered by horse and cart. Today our business is international but one thing won't change, at the end of the day, the wines are what matters!"
