From the earliest days of viticulture, farmhands would prune vines each winter to ensure a good crop of grapes the following season. They discovered that meats grilled over the discarded canes acquired a unique, slightly sweet smoky flavour. All across Europe, the burning of vine canes became a midwinter festival. The team at Hungerford Hill have revived this ancient tradition, a celebration of the synergy between barbeques and good wine, Vinefire makes the perfect match to grilled meats and seafood, seared vegetables or fried rice.
Hungerford Hill's home is in the Hunter Valley, Australia's eldest winegrowing region. The team have redefined the focus of their award winning Fishcage label to showcase some of New South Wales most exciting viticultural precincts, with the aim of highlighting regional character and purity of varietal fruit. Shiraz grapes grown in moderate to cool climates develop complex networks of flavour and offer complexity through seamlessly woven spicy tones. Their foundations of complex flavour are primed to unite through maturation in vessels of the highest quality French and American oak, quietly reposing under an underground barrel room which remains at constant temperature year round.
TASTING NOTES
Deep cherry colour. Ripe fruit aromas, rhubarb, lifted plum and smoky hints. Blackberry conserve flavours flood the palate, subtle spicy characters add interest upon the bed of silky, soft tannins. Vinefire delivers the piquant generosity of Shiraz with the complexity of refined oak. Enjoy while young and fresh alongside flame grilled lamb or gourmet snags.
