The felicitous vines of Mystery Creek are planted to one of the earliest precincts of Marlborough viticulture. A single Wairau Valley vineyard in the highly regarded Raupara subregion, superlative winegrowing terrains which pioneered Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and brought New Zealand to the world of wine. The auspicious mesoclimes at Mystery Creek yield harvests of extraordinary quality fruit, yielding a pungent wine of purity, balance and style.
Vines are grown to six hectares of Horotiu sandy loam over free draining river shingle, planted on a gentle north facing slope overlooking the Waikato River. A local fire break is used as a road frequented by harvesters motoring around the vineyard. Following the discard of any unwanted fruit, grapes are destemmed and gently pressed, juices are cool fermented to retain as much varietal flavour and aroma as possible. Yeasts are selected for their ability to enhance the provenance of a special vineyard. A mid winter bottling allows development of palate weight while preserving intense fruit character and ripe, crisp acidity.
TASTING NOTES
Light straw, lemon hues. Vibrant currant leaf and gooseberry aromas, herbaceousness and green vegetable, ripe citrus notes. A full flavoured, medium bodied palate, layered with an adundance of currant and gooseberry flavours, finely balanced acids and ripe fruit characters, all the way to a clean lingering finish. Perfect match to whiting fillets or brewed mussels.
