Vasse Felix were briefed in the 1970s by Dr Tom Cullity, Margaret River's founding vigneron, to make the best possible wine. Tom Cullity is the Margaret River flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, the articulation of several decades viticulture at Vasse Felix. Balance, elegance, complexity and restrained power are the hallmarks, the direct result of an uncompromising approach to quality. Among the first estate plantings were Cabernet and Malbec,Tom Cullity is crafted from the fruit of these eminent old vines, the ultimate elocution of Margaret River Cabernet. Established 1967, the Vasse Felix property is planted at the heart of Wilyabrup, within the nucleus of premium Margaret River viticulture. Low yielding, dry grown vines planted on some of the world's oldest soils enjoy long, warm growing seasons and cooling summer breezes from the nearby Indian and Southern Oceans. This moderating effect yields grapes of exceptional concentration and intensity, whilst retaining elegance and finesse. Heytesbury is a selection of the best barrels from the best batches. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot are separately treated to small fermenters, basket pressed and sent to a selection of the finest French oak barriques for nineteen months maturation.
TASTING NOTESDeep maroon, brick purple hues. Savouryness, meaty mushroom, nori and salty sea breeze, graphite and spiced cedary notes. The palate opens beautifully with cherry pip and cassis, festive cakes, orange rind, pot pourri and forest floor. A remarkable, refined, soft, elegant and almost creamy Cabernet style with sublime tannin and mouthfeel. Finishes endless, juicy, fine and dry. |

Planted by Dr Tom Cullity in 1967, Vasse Felix was the first vineyard and winery to be established in the Margaret River region
Situated in the sub-region of Willyabrup, Vasse Felix is now owned and operated by the Holmes a Court family. Visitors to the winery are welcomed by a unique underground cellar, a spectacular restaurant overlooking the original 1967 plantings and an exquisite art gallery, making Vasse Felix one of the great drawcards of the region. Margaret River enjoys perfect conditions for viticulture. It's Mediterranean climate features mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers - ideal for the growth of high quality fruit. By comparison with Bordeaux, Margaret River enjoys less rain during a longer, drier moderate growing and ripening period. In 1965 Dr John S Gladstones emphasised the region's suitability on his report "The Climate and Soils of Southern WA in relation to Vine Growing".
