Langtons Outstanding Classification. An exclusively Barossa Valley Shiraz this year, from a number of very old vineyards most being between seventy and a hundred years of age.
An unexpectedly cool January, reminiscent of the 2002 vintage, perfect for the vines to ripen and sprout well endowed fruit. Vineyard yields are kept low, generally between two and five tonnes per hectare. Soil types vary from red-brown earth over red clay, sandy loam over clay to sandy soils. The secret of Octavius not becoming overpowered by the lavish oak treatment lies with the on-site manufacture of barrels at Yalumba's own on-site cooperage. Yalumba is one of a select few wineries in the world who boast their own coopers practising the ancient craft of barrel making. Matured twenty two months in a combination of new and prior use, American, French and Hungarian oak hogsheads and barrels. Alcohol 14.5%
TASTING NOTES
A palate of depth and intensity with dark fruits, violets, and floral flavours help to unveil the richness of this wine. Intense flavours with concentrated layers of plum and licorice, pepper and black olives, balanced by immensely fine-grained tannins. The length is remarkable and the balance exceptional, the structure profound. Known to mature well, and ideally suited for cellaring.
About Yalumba Wines
Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned and operated winery, has a wealth of history and tradition
Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch Yalumba, aboriginal for 'all the land around'. Yalumba»
