Exceptional Langtons Classification. Exclusively Hill of Grace Shiraz from pre-phylloxera material planted around the 1860s by Henschke ancestor, Nicolaus Stanitzki, to rich alluvial soils on a shallow fertile valley just northwest of the winery. Searing heat for vintage 2004 caused sunburn and significant crop losses. New records were broken with South Australia experiencing its hottest day ever. March returned the region to glorious sunny days and cold dewy nights, allowing the fruit to ripen under near perfect conditions, delivering a harvest of excellent quality. Fourth generation Henschke patriarch Cyril Henschke made the first single vineyard Hill of Grace edition in 1958, by which time the vines were a century old. A unique delineated single historic site, the vineyard lies opposite a beautiful old Lutheran Church, built of local field stone, which was euphoniously named Gnadenberg, meaning Hill of Grace. Rainfall for the 2004 growing season was a welcome relief after severe drought. The vines grew vigorously and flowered well, and vintage delivered excellent fruit quality. Partial barrel fermentation in a combination of oaks enhances the wine. Maturation under 100% new French (50%) and American (50%) hogsheads for eighteen months prior to assemblage. Alcohol 14.0%
TASTING NOTESVery deep crimson in colour. Perfumed, with sweet lifted spicy aromas of plums and blackberry, anise with herbs and spices. Complex, there are hints of sage and pepper, vanilla and cedar. The richly complex and finely textured palate is sweet, juicy and fleshy, layered with spicy velvety tannins. Elegant and powerful, with great length. |
