Distinguished Langtons Classification. Aberfeldy is a unique vineyard, friable red loam over limestone nestled at the bottom of the easternmost hills of the Clare. The cropping level in the vineyard is never more than 1½ tonnes per acre, producing grapes with intense colour, flavour and tannins. The elegant yet intensely flavoured, highly limited yields of precious Shiraz grapes form the backbone of Aberfeldy. When the Birks of Wendouree settled Valley Clare in 1904 they planted their site to Shiraz. Many of the original vines remain and those which have perished have been replaced with rootlings of the same clones. Grapes are selectively sorted and picked, parcels are fermented on skins to dryness, followed by three weeks maceration before being basket pressed. Components are returned and the wine is sent to a mix of new and one year old American oak barrels for twelve months maturation, any aggressive tannins have been removed by a delicate egg white fining prior to bottling.
TASTING NOTESA vibrant magenta colour. Aromatics of cherry, plum, coffee and chocolate complemented by the oak-derived characters of clove, cinnamon and vanilla. The palate is full-bodied, with dark berry conserve flavours and balanced oak, tannin and acidity. The wine has persistent sweet fruit and oak aftertaste, with power and great finesse, and will reward patient cellaring. |
