Millbrook is a boutique winery situated in the historic town of Jarrahdale on the Perth Hills. The origins of the estate's Chestnut Farm winery date back to the nineteenth century when the original owner, Joseph Batt, planted an orchard and the first grapevines in 1860. Today's Millbrook has been specially designed for high quality, small batch wine production. Barking Owl over delivers in terms of balance and generous fruit, a long, savoury finish with an added dimension of oak and complexity at the close of this wonderful Shiraz.
Millbrook is now one of the largest vineyards established in the recently recognised wine growing region of Perth Hills. Barking owls are birds which live in the forests surrounding the estate's home vineyard. It seemed only fitting to name the wines after these noisy creatures which, on a moonlit night, can often be seen perched at the end of the vineyard rows. Parcels of Shiraz and Viognier from choice wineyards in Geographe, the Great Southern and Perth Hills are co-fermented and hand plunged for two weeks in open fermenters to extract good colour and flavour. Barking Owl has been aged in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels for eighteen months.
TASTING NOTES
Deep ruby magenta red. Barking Owl exudes a rich and spicy bouquet with lifted red fruit characters of cherry, plum, blueberries and red currants supported by floral Viognier aromatics over nicely scented vanillin oak. Dry, firm and chewy tannins with plum, blueberry and cherry flavours that are enhanced by spicy supporting oak. A well balanced wine showing focus and forming a strong backbone supporting the lovely regional fruit.
