Jim Barry was a pioneer of the Australian wine industry, the first qualified winemaker to work in Clare Valley. Jim had a good eye for site potential, he established some of the most distinguished vineyards and had an uncanny intuition as to which grape would best suit the soil. He planted Cabernet vines on the picturesque thirty acre Cover Drive property near the site of the old Penola cricket grounds, atop some of the Coonawarra's most precious soils. Cover Drive offeres a measure of elegance and finesse, to be enjoyed upon release, alongside your favourite comfort faire.
On the southern boundary of Coonawarra is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw the first balls bowled in anger and flashing cover drives of the local champions in 1950. The hidden geological treasure of porous limestone under the rich Terra rossa soil creates the ideal cellar by storing water for later use. From these gifts of the earth, Jim Barry has created a signature, entry level wine. The original pavilion and cricket pitch have been retained, thus preserving an important piece of Coonawarra history. Cabernet from this vineyard, along with select parcels of fruit from the Barry vineyards in Valley Clare, have been assembled to produce a wine that's solid, generous and approachable.
TASTING NOTES
A deep, opaque ruby colour with purple hue. The nose is ambitious with intense perfumes of black currant fruit, mulberry, raspberry and boysenberry. These aromas are full of complexity, offering scents of cedar, mint and eucalypt. The palate is recognizably Jim Barry Cabernet and completely satisfying, showing the hallmark characters of cassis, menthol and satsuma plum. The tannins are integrated and well structured.

About Jim Barry Wines
The Jim Barry vineyards were established in the cool uplands of the North Mount Lofty ranges in 1959
In his 57 years of winemaking, the late Jim Barry saw many changes. Jim Barry graduated from Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947 and was offered a position at the Clarevale Cooperative, becoming the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley. In 1959 Jim and his wife Nancy purchased their first property on the northern outskirts of Clare and in 1964 purchased 70 acres of land from Duncan McRae Wood, part of which now forms the famous Armagh vineyard. With a growing family to look after, Jim took on the challenge of establishing his own winery and cellar door, with the first home-made wines being produced in 1974. "When I first came to the Clare Valley, grapes were delivered by horse and cart. Today our business is international but one thing won't change, at the end of the day, the wines are what matters!" Jim Barry»
