Giesen are one of the most prominent estates in Marlborough, best known for their essential Sauvignon Blanc. Giesen's range of twenty three vineyard locations provide a considerable pallette of flavour profiles to assemble the definitive Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc while allowing winemakers the opportunity to move around the valley harvesting fruit when at its best. Giesen's choice of vineyards contribute to a distinctive style that displays tropically ripe fruit characters as well as the crisper, lively green expressions which are so characteristic of Marlborough.
Low yielding vines grown to a cool climate is what makes Giesen's wines so unique. Complex fruit aromas make them enjoyable whilst young, refreshing acidity gives the wines backbone for long aging in the bottle. Giesen aims for consistency of character and quality from vintage to vintage. Giesen's enthusiastic winemaking team work intensively to identify the harvest window for each parcel, that one or two days when fruit flavours are peaking. Following harvest and pressing, the juices are processed under anaerobic conditions and fermented relatively cool in tank to preserve the fresh vibrant fruit inherent to Sauvignon Blanc. The parcels are assembled and fined, stabilised and filtered before bottling.
TASTING NOTES
Pale yellow colour. Bouquet is fresh with aromas of pawpaw, citrus and lime juice over a distinctive herbal note. The palate has intense tropical flavours combined with classic nettle and gooseberry on a medium bodied, textural palate. Focused acidity, combined with dry, puckery orchard citrus characters, provide length to a refreshing zesty finish. Match with NZ seafood, fried fishes and white meat terrines.

More About Giesen Wines
When the Giesen brothers, Theo, Alex and Marcel, planted their first grape vines on bare land at Burnham, near Christchurch, there were those who questioned the practicality of their venture
After all, theirs was the southern-most vineyard in the world at that time and Canterbury was not then known as a wine-producing region. This was 1981 and the Giesens were, quite literally, breaking new ground for the fledgling New Zealand wine industry. Ignoring the scornful words of those who doubted Burnham's suitability for wine production, the brothers tended their plantings of Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurztraminer and were rewarded in 1984 with their first vintage.
