The Commune of Barolo, in the Piedmont region of Italy's northeast, makes one of the world's great wines, it carries its own Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita. Barolo have a long established reputation for heavy, overtly tannic, Nebbiolo varietal wines which required many years to soften before drinking. Enter Brezza, one of the principal estates in Barolo and chief protagonist of the Barolo wars, who have taken the lead in fashioning a vigorously fruit driven style with congenial tannins and judicious, supportive oak.
Brezza operate twelve and a half acres of the most splendid vineyards in Barolo, dating back to 1885. The estate and wineworks are strategically placed very close to the heart of Barolo itself. Brezza's Nebbiolo vines, Lampia clone, are planted to sandy, silt and clay soils, facing west at an altitude of 300 metres and trained to vertical canopy management. The structure of soils on the Brezza property is very similar to that of nearby Sarmassa Hill, one of the most outstanding sites in all Barolo. A shorter maceration period is employed to control the extraction of unflattering tannins, fermentations are limited to a maximum of a few days, the final wine is aged in a selection of new and seasoned oak barriques.
TASTING NOTES
Bright, ruby red colour. A lifted bouquet of cherries, liquorice and spice, balsamic, meats and herb. A ripe, fruit driven palate with bright varietal fruit, approachable in its youth and already showing good bottle development. Supply structured and exquisitely proportioned, Brezza Barolo Cannubi is renowened for its rich bouquet, even in its youth, displaying true elegance and finesse.
