Recent trends have seen the emergence of an exciting new style of Chardonnay, focussing on balance and elegance, working closely with site and vine selection. For Yalumba the entrant is a Chardonnay boasting a combination of unique terrior, and the use of wild ferment techniques. Patchwork is a Shiraz from 25-35 year old vines. The opportunity to craft a single wine of individuality and personality from a patchwork of soils, aspects, microclimates and cultures was simply too good for the Yalumba winemaking team to pass up.
Eden Valley Chardonnay excels with vibrant, creamy flavours and zest, a lovely range of flavours, good texture and great elegance. Treated to a natural or wild yeast ferment, the juice is encouraged to ferment with the indigenous vineyard yeasts which are present on the grape skins. Patchwork was also treated to inoculation by wild yeasts present on the grape skins. The components were then run to barrel, with some select parcels remaining on skins post fermentation for one to two weeks. Maturation for eighteen months in a combination of French and American hogsheads (15% new oak), with 10% American oak octaves, the balance in older hogsheads and barriques.
TASTING NOTES
The Wild Ferment Chardonnay offers creamy nougat aromas, bouquets of toasted almonds with an appealing citrussy, white peach lift. The unique yeasts each participate in a natural synergy to build layers of complexity and finesse into the wine. Palate structure is further enhanced through extended lees contact and regular stirring following the completion of fermentation. Patchwork is a deep, crimson red colour. Deliciously savoury aromas of pepper steak and quince, eucalypt and spice, secondary impressions of currant and blackberry, chocolateyness and clove. Fashioned for elegance and restraint rather than brute power, Patchwork has a supple, silken texture and fine grained, earthy tannins.

About Yalumba Winery
Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned and operated winery, has a wealth of history and tradition
Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch Yalumba, aboriginal for 'all the land around'. Yalumba»
