The Laira Vineyard was established 1893 in Coonawarra's famous Terra rossa heartland. The climes around McWilliams Barwang are often likened to the southern Rhone, where vines yield distinctive, spicy, peppery Shiraz. 1877 represents a no expense spared approach by McWilliams. Small parcels of the best and boldest Cabernet and Shiraz are placed into separate fermenters for vinification and a gentle extraction of tannins. The musts are pressed off skins at 1°Baume into a selection of new and seasoned French oak barrels for the completion of ferments, malolactic and an extended maturation to further soften the tannins and achieve total integration of the robust 1877 style.
