Shiraz is sourced from two estate vineyards at opposite ends of the Heathcote region, the Merindoc property in Tooborac to the south and Willoughby Bridge at Colbinabbin in the north. The vines at Merindoc are grown to gravelly, low fertility ironstone soils which infuse the wine with minerality, structure and cooler clime, slower ripened fruit character. Willoughby Bridge is planted on the precious strip of Cambrian rich red dirt, one of the oldest soil types in Australia, internationally renowned for the production of Heathcote's intensely flavoured Shiraz.
Shelmerdine have been one of Victoria's most prominent grape growing families for three generations. They have embraced the harsh but rewarding Australian terroir, the soils and fickle clime, all of which which impart their own identity into the wines. Following a selective hand picking, the separate parcels are treated to a short pre-fermentation cold soak before being crushed and open fermented at warm temperatures. Shelmerdine is hand plunged twice daily throughout its six days of ferment to extract the desired levels of colour and flavour. Upon completion, batches are pressed off into new and second year French oak barrels for a year's maturation before assembling.
TASTING NOTES
Vibrant red colour with purple tinges, an indication of the impressive concentration of aromas and flavours to come. The nose is redolent with dark berries, red fruits, cherries and spice, all highly reminiscent of a festive plum pudding. The palate is a perfect balance of fruit, savoury notes, fine long tannins and acid. A long fruit filled finish without any excessive ripeness, tannin extractions or overbearing oak.

About Shelmerdine Wines
Ross Shelmerdine OBE CMG (1921 – 1979) was one of the original three fathers of Victoria's Mitchelton winery, along with architect Robin Boyd and legendary winemaker Colin Preece
An innovative and visionary restaurateur, Ross saw the whole wine and tourism scene set to explode. In 1968 Ross gave his friend Colin Preece a free hand to identify the location for his great dream. In 1969, the first vines were planted on the Blackwood Park property at Mitchellstown near Nagambie, on the very site where Major Thomas Mitchell and his Australian Felix expedition had crossed the Goulburn River in 1836, opening the Victorian hinterland for pastoral settlement.
