Houghton is one of a few remaining Australian wineries to hold back small quantities of white wine from each vintage for subsequent rerelease when fully mature. This Museum Release Houghton Riesling demonstrates the superb qualities and ageing potential of a remarkably successful release from Western Australia. This aged example of Frankland River Riesling has developed a bright golden hue while still maintaining a green tinge, which indicated that it has aged well. With 10 years bottle maturation, this wine is considered fully mature.
Houghton has an immense ability to produce wines that are individual, mainly because of their outstanding collection of resources in regions like the Frankland. Fruit for the Museum Release was earmarked in 1995 as being of superior quality with unique capacity to age gracefully and develop oustanding flavours. A wine of the highest quality that Houghton can source, and from consistently good, low yielding vineyards. Winemaker Paul Lapsley. Alcohol 11.6% Sugar 4.2/litre pH 2.96 Acidity 6.94.
TASTING NOTES
Appearance is a softened yellow gold pillow slip white, a colour that can only be achieved through graceful ageing. The wine delivers aromas of baked apple crumble and warm underlying citrus tones. There is a sweetness on the front palate with fine, full flavours of lime and baked apple giving a complexity that is balanced with fine acidity. This fine aged Riesling would be a fitting combination to a masterfully prepared blue swimmer crab or ultra fresh deep fried whitebait.

Houghton Wines, based in the heart of the Swan Valley, contains a wealth of romantic history. Named after Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton in 1836, the first commercial vintage was produced in 1859 totalling 25 gallons, the foundation for one of Australia's oldest continuous winemakers. The picturesque Houghton winery property today has fifty hectares planted with premium grape varieties including Verdelho, Chardonnay, Semillon and Chenin Blanc.
