Elderton have been counting for some years on friends in the Eden Valley to provide fruit for the production of a small batch Cabernet Sauvignon trial. So impressed were they with the beauty and structure of the wines that they acquired a vineyard on the outskirts of Craneford, hand selected for Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the most beautiful sites in the area, where rolling hills and valleys provide much variety in expression, bearing vines up to thirty years of age.
Elderton can lay claim to being a home of the Jimmy Watson, having won Australia's most coveted trophy, purely on the quality of their Cabernet Sauvignon. Their Eden Valley vineyard lies just south of the small township of Craneford. Soils, topography and climate vary quite considerably to that of the Barossa Valley floor. At an elevation of 420 metres, conditions can be radically different to the Barossa Valley floor, it is generally wetter, cooler and the soils tend to be skeletal and minerally. Upon completion of vinification, Elderton is treated to a year's maturation in a selection of seasoned French and American oak hogsheads and puncheons, building structure while retaining dominance of fruit. Alcohol 13.5%
TASTING NOTES
Deep purple/ black. Blackcurrant, plums and mint nose, showing distinct regional eucalyptus which greatly lifts the aromatic profile. A solid core of blackcurrant, liquorice and cassis makes for a full bodied structure, balanced by chalky tannins. This palate of black fruits and cassis punches well above its weight.
 Elderton
Based in the heart of Australia's Barossa Valley and boasting vineyards over a century old, Elderton is a producer of some of the world's great wines
Winner of Australia's most coveted wine award the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy (1993) and the prestigious London International Wine & Spirit Competition's World's Best Shiraz Trophy (2000), Elderton remains proudly owned by the Ashmead family. The Elderton Vineyard is located on the banks of the North Para River, which is on the southern edge of the township of Nuriootpa. The Barossa Valley's climate is classified as Mediterranean, which amounts to warm summers (average temperature in January is 25°C to 35°C) and cool wet winters with an annual rainfall of 550 mm. The vineyard was planted in 1904 by Samuel Elderton Tolley, with a view to supplying Barossa wineries with premium fruit. After a period of neglect, the Ashmead family purchased the vineyard in 1979 and went about restoring it to its former glory. Modern viticulture practices were employed and the vineyard began to flourish. Elderton»
