Tastings in September 1999 confirmed that the sheer intensity, power and overall balance of 1976 Grange meant it deserved its place as one of the great vintages of the 1970s.
An outstanding vintage for the 1976 Penfolds Grange, a final blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the traditional Kalimna site and other Barossa vineyards, the Magill Estate, and Modbury in the Adelaide Plains. A very good growing season with ideal conditions throughout . The warm vintage resulted in big, rich, concentrated wines. Maturation for eighteen months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 13.90% Acidity 5%10g/L pH 3.73
TASTING NOTES
Winemaker comments by Don Ditter: Youthful purple/red. Intense and concentrated liquorice/ chocolate/ berry/truffle aromas with touches of earthiness. Powerful with rich plum/ chocolate/ berry/ liquorice fruit flavours, thick velvety tannin structure and excellent length. Should be a very long-lived wine.

Penfolds was founded by a young English doctor who migrated to one of his country's most distant colonies a century and a half ago
Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold was born in 1811, the youngest of 11 children. He studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, graduating in 1838. Like many doctors before and since, Dr Penfold had a firm belief in the medicinal value of wine. Before he left Britain he had obtained vine cuttings from the south of France and these were planted around the site of the modest stone cottage he built with his wife, Mary, at Magill on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1845.
